Chapter Ten

Ryuu didn’t bother with stopping to get anything to eat and instead headed for the Hult Center to have his chat with Clyde about their mutual and troublesome student. The cafeteria and every eatery around campus was usually packed with students all year round. Ryuu hoped to make his discussion quick but found himself sitting in the massive empty theater waiting for the theater arts instructor to finish with a group of would-be actors. The conversation didn’t seem to be going very well, and Ryuu was getting impatient.

Daniel was slouched in the seat next to him, facing away from Clyde’s little group. He hadn’t moved much since they sat down. Ryuu intentionally led Daniel to a spot on the other side of the middle aisle and more than ten rows back from the others, but for a people watcher to ignore the only people around? That was odd.

He tapped Daniel’s thigh. “He should be done soon.”

“Okay.”

“Do you want to leave?”

“No.”

Ryuu leaned forward. Daniel had that faraway look on his face again. He’d seen it once before. That look robbed him of their first opportunity to kiss, and Ryuu didn’t understand it now any more than he had then. “What are you thinking about?”

Daniel turned to face him. “I used your computer today.”

“That’s fine.”

“I looked up seme and uke.”

“And?” Ryuu watched for a sign Clyde was coming to an end of his conversation.

“You are a pervert,” Daniel whispered with his hand in front of his face.

Ryuu laughed. “And?”

“I’m the uke.”

Ryuu took Daniel’s hand and kissed his palm. “That’s a good boy.”

Daniel’s smile turned to a frown. “Don’t push your luck.” Daniel pulled his hand away quickly and turned his head.

“Wow, that didn’t make me think you’re embarrassed to be seen with me at all.” Ryuu said.

“I’m not.”

“Then why…?” Ryuu spotted a young woman in a red scarf paying more attention to the two of them than her instructor. Ryuu’d seen those sidelong glances before. He wasn’t oblivious to the opinion of others about homosexuals, but he’d never suffered from it. Not that he’d been hiding his sexuality, but the men Ryuu dated—the ones he was normally attracted to—were as reserved as he was. Daniel was different in so many ways; Ryuu couldn’t help but show him affection no matter where they were. He didn’t want that to change; he liked it.

This was Daniel’s first same-sex relationship though. He wasn’t used to the way people looked at gay couples, and Ryuu didn’t know if he was mentally strong enough to deal with that sort of prejudice. “Sorry about that.”

“Sorry about what?”

“I stopped paying attention to those looks a long time ago. I know this is all new to you, so I’ll keep my hands to myself when we’re in public.”

“Ryuu.”

“I have to tell you, Eugene is a relatively open-minded place. It’s not like Japan ten years ago. I want you to be comfortable but don’t be afraid to do what feels right.”

“Ryuu.”

“It’s different for everyone, and I have lots of patience. If you want to hold hands, that’s fine with me.
